Polio Booster: Why It’s Still Important in the Fight Against PolioPolio Booster: Why It’s Still Important in the Fight Against Polio

The polio vaccine is a critical part of the global effort to eliminate poliomyelitis, a highly infectious viral disease that can cause permanent paralysis and even death.

There are two main types of polio vaccines: the Inactivated Poliovirus Vaccine (IPV), which is injected, and the Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV), given as drops.

The IPV works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies specifically targeting poliovirus, without the risk of causing the disease itself.

Why Do We Still Need Polio Boosters?

Although initial polio vaccinations are given during infancy, a booster dose is recommended at around age 5.

This additional dose strengthens long-term immunity and helps maintain high levels of protection in the population, especially as global travel and regional outbreaks still pose a risk.

Adults may also need a polio booster in specific situations, such as:

  • Traveling to countries where polio is still present.
  • Working in laboratories handling poliovirus.
  • Providing healthcare to patients with suspected or confirmed polio.

Benefits of Polio Vaccination

Polio vaccination offers wide-ranging health and societal benefits:

  • Stimulates immune defense against poliovirus.
  • Reduces transmission rates.
  • Minimizes the risk of severe complications from infection.
  • Contributes to global polio eradication efforts.

Thanks to widespread vaccination, polio has been eliminated in many parts of the world, including most of Southeast Asia.

However, until it’s eradicated everywhere, consistent immunization including boosters is essential.

When Should the Polio Vaccine Be Given?

The Indonesian Pediatric Society (IDAI) recommends the following schedule:

For OPV (Oral):

  • First dose: At birth
  • Second dose: 2 months
  • Third dose: 4 months
  • Fourth dose: 18 months

For IPV (Injection):

  • First dose: 2 months
  • Second dose: 4 months
  • Third dose: Between 6–18 months
  • Booster dose: At 5 years old

Additional boosters may be advised based on individual risk factors.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Polio vaccines are generally very safe. However, minor side effects may occur, such as:

  • Mild fever
  • Reduced appetite
  • Irritability
  • Soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site
  • Headache or muscle aches (in older children)

These symptoms usually resolve on their own within a few days. Serious allergic reactions are extremely rare.

Contact your healthcare provider if your child experiences unusual or severe symptoms after vaccination.
